Big Dog Daddy

Review by Hope Ulrich

Rating: 4 out of 5

Big Dog Daddy debut at #1. It has 11 tracks, 9 were written or co-wrote by Keith himself and with his ever present buddy, Scotty Emerick.

'Love me if you can' shows off Keith's softer side with a scruffy sexy tone.

Canadian Connection - track 3 'White Rose' was written by our very own Fred Eaglesmith, it talks about a Canadian style gas station and what used to be before new and improved highways take over, which have limited the traffic flow through small towns. I like Toby's version of the song, it is similar in style and tempo as Eaglesmiths' recording.

'Get my Drink on' has the typical fast paced, electric guitar licks, fiddle playing solos, for this drinking song.

'Wouldn't Wanna be Ya' tells the story of a one night stand with the guy leaving town but he turns his truck around saying "I guess there's a first time for everything Yeah I think I'm gonna stay awhile". The women takes him back and says "So good to see ya, Wouldn't wanna be ya".

Title track 'Big Dog Daddy' reminds me of a 60's sock hop song, 'Johnny B. Good' by the Starlighters. It's full of electric guitar solos passed back and forth with piano stand outs, this one will get people up dancing.

'I know she hung the moon' shows just how original Toby and his friend Scotty Emerick can be with words, this love song stands out. A story about a man with a pretty girl who gets all the attention, but he is secure enough to know that she will always go home with him, as the line goes "Yeah I know she hung the moon, I'm the one that held the ladder". What makes this love song so unique is, it is not just another man loving a women song, it's about the solid relationship between the man and women and them knowing the love they have for each other.

Keith rounds out the cd with his version of a rock country song called 'Hit It'.
